I saw an SRT Cherokee at Thompson SCCA Track Night last night. I'm surprised it was allowed. I don't want to live in a world that the hot track weapon of choice is an SUV
I was at that launch (I'm an auto journo myself), and just made a post specifically about driving the track.
It's actually far from the first time I've driven an SUV on a race track - and not even the first time driving a Grand Cherokee in that situation! I drove the Grand Cherokee SRT at Circuit of the Americas about four years ago, and the BMW X6 M there too about a year later. Neither are what I would call 'fun' to drive in that setting, but they are very competent and scary fast - I clocked 110 mph on the back straight in the GC SRT, and 130 mph in the X6 M.
At Club Motorsports, the Trackhawk was showing 125-mph at the end of the front straight.
5400lbs. Gives all new meaning to the expression brick shithouse...
Whether it can handle is moot. It just beats the track into submission.....

I was at WH the other day instructing in an M2 BMW with a green student and going into turn 2, my student says "Hey...here comes the tow truck!!". Huh ????
I can't see anything in the RH mirror till we make it past the track out of 2 and sure enough...here comes the grille of a 1948ish vintage Ford F100! He gets right on our tail. Coming out of 5 I tell the student to..point him by. The truck flies by us..with authority. It crests the top of turn 6 and we glimpse it again coming out of 7..as he is passing a Porsche Cayman and another BMW...and disappears around turn 8. I'm thinking that ain't my grandads pickup! Come to find out it has a Cobra 4.6L drivetrain(T56 transmission) and full coilover suspension, tubular control arms,R&P steering, big Wilwood brakes and respectable track tires and wheels. Car show quality jet black paint job.
And,the guy can drive..
I guess you can't underestimate any vehicle these days..
It's not what you drive, it's how you drive. "Lap times matter"
